Of these, the tent is the most confusing for beginners, but the most important one to choose is the tent.
I would like to explain how to choose a tent based on my past experiences.
I would like to explain how to choose a tent based on my past experiences.
There are many different types of tents.
If you have never camped before, you don’t know which one to buy. Here are the points that I think will help you decide which one to buy.
Point 1: Deciding the size Whether it is for solo or group use
– Point 2: Specifications (water pressure resistance, no water leakage)
– Point 3: Ease of setting up
– Point 4: I like the look
.
Explain in order.
Point 1: Determine the size of the tent
Be sure to decide what kind of camping you envision and then determine the size accordingly. In particular, be sure to check the size of the inner tent (sleeping area).
Most campers rarely spend time inside their tents, except for sleeping. Most people spend most of their time outside the tent under a tarp, or even if they don’t use a tarp, they are usually outside the tent because they use the fire for cooking or making a fire.
The only time you will spend time in a tent will be when it rains or when you have decided from the beginning that you will be camping as a nest egg.
If you are solo, choose a tent for one or two people because you don’t need a big tent and it will be difficult to set up. If you are in a group, choose a tent for 4 or 5 people.
The tent box or description will always say how many people it is for.
This can be confusing, but let’s use the number of people listed as the basic rule of thumb – about 1. I will use my solo tent (Ogawa Vigas) as an example.
Inner tent sizes are listed as shown in the photos.
Vigas Inner Tent Sizes
This tent is intended for 2 to 3 people, but it is quite tight for two adults to sleep in. Even if you can sleep, it will be very cramped and you will not be able to sleep satisfactorily.
So when you buy a tent, check the inner tent size in the description to make sure you have enough sleeping space.
Let me briefly introduce you to my very cool tent, the Ogawa Vigas (pictured above is the Vigas 1, now the Vigas 2 with minor changes).(The photo shows the Vigas 1, which has now undergone a minor change to the Vigas 2)
Some of you may not have heard of Vision Peaks, but this is a private brand product of Himalaya, a sporting goods store.
The best thing about the QuattroArch 2 Room + RF is that it has an integrated tarp.
I don’t like tarps very much.
I don’t like tarps because it’s a hassle to put up a tarp separately from the tent, it obscures the view of the surroundings, and there are guy ropes all over the place.
But with this tent, you don’t have to worry about that.
Vision Peaks also offers many other inexpensive and good camping gears, so if you are interested, please check them out.
Since Vision Peaks is a private brand of Himalaya, repairs are available at the store, so it is recommended for those who are concerned about the warranty.
Point 2 Specs: Water pressure resistance
Each tent has different specifications.Water pressure is a measure of waterproofness.
Water pressure is a measure of waterproofness, and is a numerical value that indicates how high a tent can withstand a 1 cm square of water piled on top of the fabric without water leaking out. Camping is usually held in good weather, but it is not uncommon for sudden rain to fall. It is therefore important to purchase a tent with a certain degree of water pressure resistance to protect against exposure to heavy rain.
It is mainly expressed as 1000 mm or 2500 mm.
The higher the water pressure resistance, the better, but the higher the water pressure, the more disadvantages there are.
The disadvantage is poor ventilation.
Poor ventilation means that condensation easily forms, and it gets hot in the summer.
Most tents sold in Japan are between 1500mm and 2000mm, which is enough to withstand heavy rainfall.
Cheaper tents may be 500 mm or so, but since the weather can change suddenly when camping in the mountains, these should be avoided as much as possible. A flooded tent can also cause the temperature to drop, which can be life-threatening in the worst case scenario.
Always be safe and enjoy your camping experience.
Point 3: Ease of setting up
The third point is the ease of setting up.
The reason why ease of setup is important is that it reduces the amount of time you have to camp. Many campgrounds have a check-in time of 1:00 pm.
Let’s say you arrive at the campground at 14:00.
From there, it would take about an hour to unpack the car, set up the tents and tarps, spread out the table, chop the wood, and set up the campsite at 、、、、,
It takes about 1:30 to 2 hours to set up, which means it will be around 4:00 p.m. Then there will be no time to relax and enjoy the scenery. Then there will be no time to relax and enjoy the scenery. If that is the case, there is no point in coming to camp.
And after 5:00 p.m., it starts to get dark.
I took a lot of time to set up the tent at my first camping trip, and it took me until 6:00 p.m. to set up the tent.
I have a good memory of that, but I would recommend a tent that does not take too long to set up because you want to relax and heal after a long day.
The tent I recommend is the Quick Villa by German manufacturer Qeedo.
This is a one-touch tent, so it takes about 5 minutes to set up.
One-touch tents have poles and fabric integrated into one piece and can be easily set up by simply unfurling it. It is also easy to clean up.
The Quick Villa is 220 cm high and 320 cm deep, so it’s huge. Four adults can sleep inside.
If anyone is interested, please check it out.
Point 4: I like the way it looks.
To be honest, this is the most important thing.
Tents are expensive and you won’t be replacing it many times, so do your research and choose the one you won’t regret.
Conclusion
How was your camping experience?
There are many things to prepare for camping, including a tent, and it may seem daunting for beginners to start camping.
I felt the same way at first.
However, most of them can be used for a long time once you have them.
Now I am very glad that I started camping.
We hope you will give it a try, too.By the way, please take a look at this page about campsites and gear, which is a must-read for beginners.
